Admission Notification

25 June 2026- Ref.No 197/SNLU/REG/2026 In relation to the Ph.D. Admission, 2026 the following events have been rescheduled. 30 May 2026 It is hereby notified for information of all concerned that the candidates who have already completed their Ph.D. Coursework from other University can apply for registration in Sikkim National Law University. All eligible & interested candidates are required to submit the prescribed registration form along with necessary documents and synopsis on or before 10th June.

The total no. of seats in Ph.D. Programme in Law for the academic session 2026-2027 is 15. Category-wise intakes of total seats are as follows:

Note:

(i) Reservation of seats and relaxation in eligibility criteria is subject to the University Rules and Regulations.

(ii) Any unfilled seat(s) reserved for Sikkim State (COI) Candidates will be treated as General and will be offered to the General Category candidates in order of merit.

(iii) The University reserves the right not to fill all the seats.

Courses Offered & Eligibility

Ph.D. in Law

Doctoral programme offered for advanced research in Law, Public Policy, and interdisciplinary legal studies.

  • A 5 Years or 3 Years Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Law and a Master’s Degree in Law or a Professional Degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree in Law by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign educational institution established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting, or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • OR
  • A 5 Years or 3 Years Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Law and a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences or Humanities from any recognised educational institution, Indian or a foreign educational institution accredited as per UGC Regulations, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign educational institution established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting, or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • Provided that candidates with qualifications in Social Sciences and Humanities may be admitted to the Programme if the research they wish to pursue interfaces with the discipline of Law with a special focus on Public Policy or Law.
  • For Sikkim State (Reserved) candidates and for other candidates who had obtained their Master’s Degree prior to 19th September, 1991, a relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed.

Admission Process

  • The University may admit candidates through an SNLU-Research Eligibility Test (SNLU-RET). The SNLU-RET syllabus shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. Candidates who have secured 50% marks in the entrance test are eligible to be called for the interview.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in the entrance examination for the Sikkim State Reserved candidates.
  • Candidates with UGC-NET JRF / UGC-NET / SLET / M.Phil. are exempted from the entrance test and may directly appear in the interview.
  • Admission shall be made through evaluation of Research Proposals followed by interview. Total marks for interview will be 100 (30% marks will be based on the candidate’s postgraduate marks and 70% marks on candidate’s performance in the interview).
  • The Research Proposal should contain: Proposed Title of the Research, Conceptual Background, Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis, Research Questions, and Research Methodology.
  • Note:
    If (i) SNLU-RET qualified / UGC-NET / SLET / M.Phil. qualified candidates and (ii) Candidates having UGC-NET JRF secure the same marks in the merit list, then (ii) may be preferred over (i) for admission.
